Summer is just around the corner and this is when your garden truly comes alive. With all our garden designs, we aim to help you get the most from your blooms, which is why we always recommend long-flowering perennials that guarantee you colour and fullness throughout the season.
With so many incredible summer plants to choose from, narrowing down our top 5 long flowering plants was a challenge. But when it comes to hardworking plants that give you colour and impact, a few stand out from the crowd.
This short list also works fantastically for so many garden styles, whether your garden is modern, cottage, coastal or urban, these are ones to add to your wish list. Remember, these are all sun-loving perennials, it’s important to place them in a sunny, well-drained spot where they will thrive!
1) Salvia nemorosa ‘Caradonna’
Salvia are a staple for any garden designer and are favourited for their spires of vibrant blue, purple, or pink flowers and aromatic foliage. It not only looks striking but also attracts pollinators like bees and butterflies. Varieties such as Salvia nemorosa ‘Caradonna’ bloom from late spring right into early autumn with just a little deadheading.
2) Geum ‘Totally Tangerine’
Geums are often overlooked in favour of bolder summer plants, but they’re quietly brilliant performers that are perfect for filling the awkward gaps between spring bulbs and larger growing perennials. They have dainty, soft flowers that range in uplifting shades of orange, rich red, creamy apricot, and yellow, that bring energy and contrast to your borders.
3) Agastache ‘Blue Fortune’
Agastache is a low maintenance perennial known for its long-lasting, light purple, blue spikes that bloom from midsummer and through autumn. Its foliage has a fragrant liquorice scent which helps to deter pests, whilst the flowers encourage bees and butterflies. It will thrive in warm, dry spots, perfect if you want a low-maintenance pop of colour in your garden.
4) Erigeron karvinskianus
We include Erigeron in every garden we design, this low growing hero is perfect for filling in those small spaces or cascading over raised beds. Easy to grow and low maintenance, Erigeron is a reliable choice for gardeners looking to add charm to their outdoor space. Tip! Incorporate Erigeron into large pots or containers to fill in empty spaces and add a soft, trailing effect.
5) Achillea millefolium
Achilleas are ideal for borders, adding soft, feathery texture that beautifully contrasts with more structured plants. Achillea’s upright and clustered growth helps create structure and height, making your garden look full and dynamic. They also come in a huge variety of colours, from cool pinks and purples to warming oranges, red and yellows.
