Once the structure was established, planting design became the main focus. We wanted to create a Mediterranean atmosphere that complemented Brighton’s coastal setting while being resilient enough to thrive in the elements. The planting scheme included drought-tolerant and salt-hardy species such as lavender, agapanthus, phormium, rosemary, and olive trees. These plants not only provided a range of textures and seasonal colour but also released fragrance when brushed past, adding to the sensory experience. Grasses and succulents were carefully chosen to soften the hard edges of the steel and stone, creating a dynamic balance between architectural lines and natural forms.

In this Garden Design Brighton project, the planting was designed to look effortless yet highly considered. Each plant was positioned to provide movement, shape, and rhythm throughout the seasons. In summer, bold flowers and spiky leaves dominate, while in winter, the structure of the grasses and evergreens keep the garden visually interesting. The palette of greens, silvers, purples, and terracotta tones reflects the nearby sea and cliffs of the Sussex coast, making the garden feel connected to its environment.

Lighting played an important role too. We integrated low-level lighting along the paths and beneath the retaining walls to highlight the garden’s curves after dark. Subtle uplighting beneath the larger plants created a warm, welcoming glow in the evenings, allowing the garden to be enjoyed long after sunset.
