Contemporary
Eastbourne
This sophisticated and refined Garden Design Eastbourne project showcases how strong structure, subtle materials, and elegant planting can transform a dated garden into a modern retreat. The original garden lacked flow, and the brief was to link the spaces together to create a design that encouraged exploration and movement while offering distinct “rooms” for entertaining, dining, and relaxing.
Our vision was to deliver a modern entertaining garden that looked clean, contemporary, and cohesive. We approached this Eastbourne garden design with the goal of combining functionality with sophistication, resulting in a space that now feels expansive, beautifully balanced, and truly bespoke. The clients wanted a space that felt connected to their home yet offered different experiences throughout the day — a place to enjoy morning coffee in the sun, host dinners with friends, and unwind in the evening surrounded by gentle lighting and greenery.

The garden was divided into several well-defined zones, each with a unique purpose yet visually connected through consistent materials and planting. A circular dining terrace sits gracefully against the existing curved flint wall — a charming Sussex feature that anchors the design in its coastal context. This wall was celebrated rather than hidden, providing texture and warmth behind the sleek porcelain paving. Its subtle variations in tone and age contrast perfectly with the contemporary finishes, reflecting the blend of tradition and innovation that defines the best Garden Design Eastbourne projects.
Adjacent to the dining area is a generous pergola-covered entertainment space, designed for year-round enjoyment. This bespoke structure includes built-in heating, soft lighting, and comfortable sofa seating, creating a stylish outdoor room that extends the home’s living space. A dedicated sun lounging deck and outdoor cooking zone complete the composition, making the entire garden perfect for social gatherings, quiet afternoons, and relaxed weekends.

High-quality materials define this Garden Design Eastbourne project. Large porcelain slabs create a crisp, modern terrace, while diagonally laid composite decking adds subtle movement and contrast. These hard surfaces are softened by gravel beds filled with layered, low-growing plants chosen for their texture and resilience. Natural stone edging subtly separates the planting from the paving, ensuring clean lines and a sense of order without losing softness or charm.
The planting palette is simple yet striking — ornamental grasses, Echinacea, Achillea, and Agastache bring colour, softness, and pollinator-friendly appeal. The mix feels naturalistic but precise, balancing formality with fluidity. Around the garden’s edge, multi-stem trees and pleached specimens introduce structure and privacy while creating depth and rhythm. Seasonal interest was key to the planting design, ensuring the garden looks beautiful year-round, from the fresh greens of spring to the rich seedheads of autumn.
Lighting plays a central role in this garden design in Eastbourne. Discreet wall lights highlight the flint textures, while uplighters under trees add gentle drama after dusk. The pergola’s integrated lighting enhances the warm tones of the timber, creating a luxurious glow at night. The result is a garden that glows beautifully after sunset, inviting you to stay outdoors long into the evening and enjoy the peaceful Sussex air.
Every element of this project was considered to maximise flow and comfort. The layout encourages movement between zones, creating a continuous experience without visual barriers. Timber fencing with integrated lighting surrounds the space, adding warmth and security. Each “room” feels private yet part of the same story — a hallmark of good Garden Design Eastbourne principles.

Maintenance was also a priority. The planting is designed to be easy to care for while providing year-round interest. Porcelain paving and composite decking require minimal upkeep, ensuring the garden remains pristine with little effort. Smart irrigation and drainage systems were subtly integrated to protect the planting during dry coastal summers, ensuring longevity and sustainability.
This Garden Design Eastbourne project demonstrates how thoughtful planning and precise detailing can completely reinvent a property. Every material, line, and plant was selected to create balance, flow, and beauty — a garden that feels modern yet timeless. It’s a space that captures the essence of Sussex coastal living: elegant, relaxed, and deeply connected to its surroundings.
If you’re seeking inspiration for your own garden design in Eastbourne, this project shows what’s possible when craftsmanship, creativity, and functionality come together in perfect harmony — a celebration of outdoor living designed to be enjoyed in every season.
